1st Edition 1917. Bookplate of Charles Lambert Rutherston who was the elder brother of the painter William Rothenstein 1872-1945, he worked in the family woollen business in Bradford and inherited the bulk of his father’s estate. In about 1908 he became interested in Chinese art. In 1916 he changed his name to Rutherston. After his death his collection was shown for seven years at the V&A
Selwyn & Blount, one of 525 copies. Original grey paper covered boards with title label to the spine. Frontispiece of the author after a photograph by Duncan Williams. The author's first regularly published book, issued six months after Thomas was killed in action on the Western Front. Book is good++ and quite bright. Edges lightly rubbed. Light marks to boards. Spine label age toned and marked/rubbed. Contents good.
