
An Original Secretarial Letter Signed at the time by Home secretary Robert Peel. The letter confirms a draft for 100 guineas from the King to contribute towards a monument to the memory of Sir Thomas Picton in Carmarthan Wales. A public monument was erected to his memory in St Paul's Cathedral, by order of Parliament, and in 1823 another Picton Monument was erected at Carmarthen by subscription, the king contributing a hundred guineas. Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, FRS 1788 – 1850 was a British Conservative statesman who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1834–1835 and 1841–1846) simultaneously serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1834-1835) and twice as Home Secretary (1822–1827 and 1828–1830). He is regarded as the father of modern English policing, owing to his founding of the Metropolitan Police Service. Peel was one of the founders of the modern Conservative Party. Size 180mm x 115mm.
