
An Original Royal Society Part Written/Printed letter to Professor Peter Anderson Stuart and Signed by John William Strutt as Secretary. 3rd Baron Rayleigh. The letter dated 1892. The letter deals with a meeting to present his papers. John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, 1842-1919 was an English mathematician who made extensive contributions to science. He spent all of his academic career at the University of Cambridge. Among many honors, he received the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his investigations of the densities of the most important gases and for his discovery of argon in connection with these studies." He served as president of the Royal Society from 1905 to 1908 and as chancellor of the University of Cambridge from 1908 to 1919. Sir Thomas Peter Anderson Stuart 1856-1920 was a Scottish-born professor of physiology, founder of the medical school at the University of Sydney. Provenance: From the family of autograph collector Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949), wife of Colonel William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). Emily was the daughter of William Lee, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow from 1874 to 1886, and granddaughter of John Lee (1779-1859), Principal of Edinburgh University from 1840 to 1859.
