
An Original Letter written and Signed by Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick to Eva Hartree C1912. A letter to Eva Hartree stating she was unable to attend the foundation party for the F.U.W as she will be away from Cambridge. Eleanor Mildred Sidgwick 1845-1936 was born Eleanor Mildred Balfour in East Lothian, daughter of James Maitland Balfour and Lady Blanche Harriet. She was born into perhaps the most prominent political clan in 19th-century Britain, her brother Arthur would eventually himself become prime minister. She was a physics researcher assisting Lord Rayleigh, an activist for the higher education of women, Principal of Newnham College of the University of Cambridge, and a leading figure in the Society for Psychical Research. Eva Hartree (née Rayner), had a score of her own achievements, serving on the Borough Council for 20 years to become the first female Mayor of Cambridge, and was the Honorary Secretary of the British Red Cross Society for the Borough. She had a passion for working with refugees and championed women's equality as Secretary of the Farnham Suffrage Society, eventually going on to become President of the British National Council of Women, an organisation which fights to give women rights and a voice in both national and international affairs.
