An Original Letter written and Signed by Andrew Russell Forsyth to William Hartree with Regards to Women's rights and degrees at Cambridge University. C1897. A letter from Forsyth to William Hartree concerning the vote for women to receive degrees at Trinity College Cambridge. An interesting letter as William Hartree was Eva Hartree's husband. She was a staunch feminist, first female Mayor of Cambridge and a suffragette. They were the parents of Douglas Rayner Hartree. In 1897 a proposal was carefully worded to grant women formal recognition of their degrees, but no share in university government. Despite this, Cambridge University rejected the notion by 1713 votes to 662. The vote turned into a riot in Cambridge. It was until 1948 that women's degrees were recognised at the University. Andrew Russell Forsyth, 1858-1942, was a British mathematician. He was elected a fellow of Trinity and then appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Liverpool at the age of 24. He returned to Cambridge as a lecturer in 1884 and became Sadleirian Professor of Pure Mathematics in 1895. Size is 178mm x 115mm. Condition is good. Light folding creases.
