An Original Letter Handwritten by Kate Greenaway on behalf of Louisa Garrett Anderson to Effi Gray (Euphemia Chalmers Millais, Lady Millais) Undated but c1890 from the home of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. A fascinating letter that links four great women of the 19th and 20th century. Kate Greenaway has written the letter on behalf of Louisa Anderson inviting Effi Gray to a Pastoral Play in the garden of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Kate Greenaway was a great friend of John Ruskin the former husband of Effi Gray and were still friends after their divorce. Both Ruskin and Greenaway were represented by the literary agent A P watt where the letter came from. Kate Greenaway was medically advised and developed a great friendship with Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and her family.

Louisa Garrett Anderson, CBE (28 July 1873 – 15 November 1943) was a medical pioneer, a member of the Women's Social and Political Union, a suffragette, and social reformer. She was the daughter of the founding medical pioneer Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, whose biography she wrote in 1939.
Effi Gray (Euphemia Chalmers Millais, Lady Millais) 1828-1897 was a Scottish artists' model and writer who was married to Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais. She had previously been married to the art critic John Ruskin, but she left him with the marriage never having been consummated; it was subsequently annulled. This famous Victorian "love triangle" has been dramatised in plays, films, and an opera.
Elizabeth Garrett Anderson 1836-1917 was an English physician and suffragist. She was the first woman to qualify in Britain as a physician and surgeon. She was the co-founder of the first hospital staffed by women, the first dean of a British medical school, the first woman in Britain to be elected to a school board and, as mayor of Aldeburgh, the first female mayor in Britain.
Catherine Greenaway 1846-1901 was an English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children's book illustrations.
From an autograph book kept by A. P. Watt (1834-1914), founder of A. P. Watt & Son in 1875, the world's first literary agents.
