An Original Harrow School Handwritten and Signed Letter by Winston's Churchill's Inspirational Teacher James Edward Cowell Welldon. Undated. A letter to a friend discussing boarding schools and offering them to come to Harrow. James Edward Cowell Welldon 1854-1937 was an English clergyman and scholar. He was Bishop of Calcutta from 1898 to 1902, Dean of Manchester from 1906 to 1918, and Dean of Durham from 1918 to 1933. Winston Churchill’s former Private Secretary Sir John Colville wrote that one of the men from his youth whom Churchill held in high regard was the Head Master of his old school, Harrow. James Edward Cowell Welldon’s decision to give Winston the opportunity to attend Harrow was severely criticized, and he was accused of favoritism. In the official biography of his father, Randolph Churchill described the Head Master’s relationship with young Winston: “Throughout his school career Welldon showed infinite patience, and took considerable pains with Winston; ever afterwards the two retained an admiration for each other.
