The letter reads - 'Dear Bill, I do hope you got a letter from me explaining that your broadsides arrived too late for me to deal with them before we left England. I'll do so in mid-September when we return. I am so sorry about this misunderstanding which seems a poor return for your kindness to me in West Virginia. Yours sincerely, Stephen. I believe I'm meeting President Voss and some people from West Virginia at Monet's Garden October 4th'. Sir Stephen Harold Spender 1909-1995 was an English poet, novelist and essayist whose work concentrated on themes of social injustice and the class struggle.
