
An Original Handwritten and Signed letter by the Irish Landscape artist William Davies, to the Pre-Raphaelite artist and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Undated.The top part of the letter has been cut off. The remaining letter reads -'I thank you for your letter received this morning. I am surprised myself that the worst of my illness should have passed so rapidly; but the doctor says it is not unusual in these cases. I, however, find myself capable of very little exertion at present and am forbidden to leave the house; an incarceration which I shall make as short as possible if the weather be only decent. I learned yesterday that Mrs Smithson has returned very much depressed from Malvern. I understood Allen... I shall have full particulars in a day or two, and perhaps you may hear something. I am afraid if this is the case it looks bad and does not offer a good prospect for the future. Believe me, Very truly yours, W. Davies' William Davis 1812-1873 was an Irish artist, and part of a group of Liverpool based artists who were influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite style of painting. He was born in Dublin, received his artistic education there and begun his career as a portrait painter. He moved to Liverpool in 1842 and began to exhibit in the Liverpool Academy. In 1851, he started to exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Originally painting still lives in 1853 he began producing landscapes. His work was admired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown, through which he was asked to join the Hogarth club. Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti 1828-1882, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English poet, illustrator, painter, and translator, and member of the Rossetti family. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti inspired the next generation of artists and writers, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones in particular. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Size of letter is 115mm x 105mm. Folding centre crease.
