An Original Handwritten and Signed Paper by the Arts & Crafts Architect & Designer Philip Webb. A rare very lengthy signed Autograph Letter dated 1902 and headed S.P.A.B. (Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings) illustration book. That he doesn't wish his name, or the name of the church in question to be given. That the example for the society's use was a good one as many churches have suffered in the same way, talking of the work carried out on it - that the pencil drawing & plans were his original work, that some alterations were made by Webb on the ground as the work proceeded - as is always the right thing to do (hence the need of the Architect being on the ground when such work is going on) that many 13th century details of masonry had been found. He mentions a visit from William Lethaby where they discussed the title of the book. He says it would be too late to gather the diagrams of his Knoyle work (presumably Clouds House) to include in the book. He suggests that William Weir may offer suitable contributions. Philip Speakman Webb (1831-1915) Architect & Designer often referred to as the father of Arts & Crafts Architecture. He co-founded the SPAB with William Morris. Webb's first commission was on William Morris's Red House. Friends & colleagues included Scawen Blunt, S.C. Cockerell, Edward Burne Jones, Dante Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown etc. Size is 225mm x 180mm.
