
An Original Handwritten and Signed Letter from Sir Francis Bond Head discussing the Britannia bridge and its Construction in Wales. Dated 1849 a year before the bridge was opened. A long, interesting letter discussing Bone Heads opinion of the construction and his visit to the Britannia Bridge. It also mentions the designer of the bridge William Fairbairn. Bone Head subsequently wrote a book about it titled. High-Ways and Dry-Ways; or, the Britannia and Conway Tubular Bridges. Britannia Bridge is a bridge in Wales that crosses the Menai Strait between the Isle of Anglesey and city of Bangor. It was originally designed and built by the noted railway engineer Robert Stephenson as a tubular bridge of wrought iron rectangular box-section spans for carrying rail traffic. Sir Francis Bond Head, 1st Baronet 1793 – 1875 was Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada during the rebellion of 1837. Head was an officer in the corps of Royal Engineers of the British Army from 1811 to 1825; as such he earned a Waterloo Medal. Head was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in 1835 in an attempt by the British government to appease the reformers in the colony, such as William Lyon Mackenzie, who wanted responsible government.
