
An Original Handwritten and Signed Letter by Dean of Saint Paul and Future Archbishop of Canterbury William Sancroft. Dated 1668. Receipt Letter written and signed by Sancroft while Dean and receiver General of St Pauls Cathedral, acknowledging receipt from Richard Freshwater of £25 rent for the manor and rectory of Heybridge Essex, £7 10s rent for the vicar of Heybridge and £1 rent for woods at Heybridge. William Sancroft 1617 – 1693 was the 79th Archbishop of Canterbury, and was one of the Seven Bishops imprisoned in 1688 for seditious libel against King James II, over his opposition to the king's Declaration of Indulgence. Deprived of his office in 1690 for refusing to swear allegiance to William and Mary, he later enabled and supported the consecration of new nonjuring bishops leading to the nonjuring schism.
