An Original Handwritten Note Part Secretarial but Signed to the Base by Scottish WriterJames Hogg. Undated. James Hogg 1770-1835 was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scottish and English. He is best known today for his novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. His other works include the long poem The Queen's Wake (1813). He was a friend of many of the great writers of his day, including Sir Walter Scott, of whom he later wrote an unauthorised biography. He became widely known as the ‘Ettrick Shepherd’, a nickname under which some of his works were published. Hogg writes an undated note: Dear Sir, I find your subscription of £1.1 for the Queen’s Wake charged to my account. Please pay the bearer who will deliver you the copy and receipt. Yours most truly, James Hogg Hogg’s narrative poem The Queen’s Wake was first published in 1813, with further editions until 1819, so it’s fair to assume that the note was written at about this time. The script appears to be in another hand, but is signed by Hogg. The piece (3½” x 2½”) has been pasted on to a larger sheet of paper. There’s toning, creasing and a square of paper loss top left. It comes with an engraving of Hogg first published in 1820.
