
An Original Handwritten Letter Signed by Artist Elizabeth Southerden Thompson nee Butler to Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig. Dated 1926. A letter discussing payment for work undertaken on a a Irish painting. Elizabeth Southerden Thompson 1846-1933, later known as Lady Butler, was a British painter who specialised in painting scenes from British military campaigns and battles, including the Crimean War and the Napoleonic Wars. Her notable works include The Roll Call, The Defence of Rorke's Drift, and Scotland Forever! (showing the Scots Greys at Waterloo). She wrote about her military paintings in an autobiography published in 1922: "I never painted for the glory of war, but to portray its pathos and heroism." She was married to British Army officer Sir William Butler, becoming Lady Butler after he was knighted. On her husband's retirement from the army, she moved with him to Ireland, where they lived at Bansha Castle, County Tipperary. Major Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig 1873-1943 was a British Army officer, heraldist and author of various works on art history, especially armorial porcelain. Tudor-Craig was an officer in the 4th (militia) battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles. He served as Instructor of Musketry with the 8th Provisional Battalion in 1902. From an album of his letters.
