An Original Hand Written and Signed Letter by the poet Samuel Rogers to Prime Minister Lord Aberdeen. Undated C1845. The letter reads 'I need not say how much flattered I am by your remembrance of me on this occasion and how happy I shall be to act with you as far as I can, in promoting such a scheme. Unfortunately I am just now as lame as a very bad sprain can make me; but if I have a leg to stand upon, you may depend upon seeing me tomorrow at one o'clock. If I should be unhappily prevented, pray use me in any way and to any extent you think best. The business cannot be in better hands. I only hope (and there I know that Sir Thomas Lawrence will most zealously join with me) that the tablet or monument may not be determined upon without some consultation with Flaxman, who, I think, was employed in the first business. Ever yours and sincerely, Samuel Rogers'. Samuel Rogers 1763-1855 was an English poet, during his lifetime one of the most celebrated, although his fame has long since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of these and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources for information about London artistic and literary life, with which he was intimate, and which he used his wealth to support. He made his money as a banker and was also a discriminating art collector. Size is 185m x 112mm. Condition is good. Folding crease.
