An Original Hand Written and Signed Letter by Matthew Arnold. Letter dated 1885. A handwritten and signed letter by the writer Matthew Arnold on his work as a schools inspector and his book 'Popular Education in France'. 'Dear Sir, It is now many years since I saw the schools of the Christian Brothers. They are not to be compared with the Realschulen of Germany, for all that I saw were schools for the people, Volkschulen. What I thought of them you will find in my report on "Popular Education in France", which will probably, either in the form of a Bluebook, or in the form of a volume published by Messrs Longman, be found in the public libraries of Birmingham. Believe me, with many thanks for your kind expressions, Your faithful servant, Matthew Arnold'

Matthew Arnold 1822 – 1888 was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. He was also an inspector of schools for thirty-five years, and supported the concept of state-regulated secondary education Size 180mm x 115mm Condition is good. Light folding creases.
