An Original Hand Written and Signed letter by Writer Stephen Spender with Regards to John Minton 'Encounter' Magazine Article. Letter dated C1955 and reads - 'Dear Olive, I have to go away a few days - in case I haven't written to you. I just wanted to say that I think the long Apollinaire translation extremely beautiful, though I do not think we would publish such a long translation. Also on the whole I prefer the Apollinaire style transcended in your own original English. The new version of the J.M. poem is very good. Don't you think it could be published as to John Minton? If so I would use it. Without the name, it seems dreadfully private. Yours in haste, Stephen. Back next Wednesday.' Sir Stephen Harold Spender 1909-1995 was an English poet, novelist and essayist whose work concentrated on themes of social injustice and the class struggle. He was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry by the United States Library of Congress in 1965. Size of letter is 200mm x 125mm. Folding centre crease.
